From Steel Town Roots to Boardroom Impact: Meet Scott
Scott Johnson
We’re thrilled to welcome Scott Johnson to our board. With over 35 years in financial services and currently serving as CEO of Community First Credit Union, Scott brings not just expertise but also the kind of genuine commitment that makes a difference where it matters most — with kids, families, and the future of our community.
Scott’s journey started in a steel town in southeastern Pennsylvania, where he learned the true meaning of hard work by watching his father juggle three jobs while attending law school at night. That example of grit and determination left a lasting impression — the kind that doesn’t wash off with a little success. And even after earning degrees in economics and business (Hobart & William Smith Colleges, followed by an MBA from UC Irvine), it’s those early lessons in perseverance and humility that still guide his leadership today.
When we asked Scott a few questions about his past, we got a glimpse into what makes him tick — and why we’re lucky to have him on board.
Was there a teacher, coach, or adult in your life who believed in you? What did they do that stuck with you?
“Without a doubt my grandmother. She was always there to provide positive support and encouragement to me. Having a role model to provide consistently positive support is so critical to the emotional well-being of a child. She was the standard bearer that I tried to emulate for my own children.”
What kind of kid were you—curious, shy, loud, always reading, always climbing trees?
“I was curious and always outside with the other kids in the neighborhood playing baseball, street hockey, football, kick the can, etc. When we weren’t in school, I was out the door from the minute I woke up until it was time to be home for dinner.”
What values did your family or upbringing pass on to you that still guide you today?
“I was born in a steel town in southeastern PA. My father was born and raised in that same blue-collar town. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the AirForce. After his initial tour was done, he worked 3 jobs to put himself through college and law school (at night). The example my father set of hard work and personal sacrifice to achieve your goals still guides me today.”
Scott doesn’t just bring boardroom experience — he brings real-life, sleeves-rolled-up dedication. He’s seen firsthand how determination can change a life, and he’s committed to making sure the kids we serve see that too.
Whether he’s leading a credit union, mentoring his own children, or serving on our board, Scott shows up with purpose and heart. We’re fortunate to have him as part of our mission, and we're betting he’s still pretty great at kick the can, too.
